Frequently Asked Questions

Q: is acupuncture painful?

A: The sensation of receiving an acupuncture treatment is rarely described as painful. However, that is not to say it is devoid of sensation. Acupuncture needles are solid and very thin and do not injure the skin as regular injection needles do. Many patients fall asleep during treatment or experience a deep rest. Following treatment it is common for the patient to feel a tremendous sense of relaxation and/or exhilaration.

Q: Is Acupuncture Safe?

A: This is a very common question among those who have never experienced an acupuncture treatment. The answer relies on the skill of the practitioner. If he or she is unsure of what they are doing, it is certainly possible to inflict injury with an acupuncture needle. However, when practiced by a licensed, trained acupuncturist, acupuncture is extremely safe and there is no danger whatsoever. The importance of seeking an appropriately trained practitioner cannot be overstated.

Q: How do i find a qualified acupuncturist?

A: Look for licensed acupuncturists with appropriate training and credentials. Checking reviews and asking for recommendations can also help you find a qualified practitioner in your area.

Q: what conditions can acupuncture treat?

A: Acupuncture is commonly used to treat pain (such as back pain, migraines, and joint pain), stress, anxiety, insomnia, digestive issues, and various other health concerns. Click here to read more about Acupuncture and what it can treat.

Q: Can children receive acupuncture?

A: Yes, we treat children frequently at our clinic. Children can receive acupuncture and often have excellent results with it. However, in cases where children are uneasy about needles, we have alternatives such as magnets and press needles which are less invasive and more easily tolerated.

Q: Are there any contra-indications for acupuncture?

A: There are very few situations where acupuncture is not advised. These are the most common:

  • During pregnancy - while it is certainly safe to receive acupuncture during pregnancy, there are several points that are contra-indicated in pregnancy. Our practitioners are well versed in acupuncture for infertility, IVF assistance and all stages of pregnancy.

  • If the patient is under the influence of drugs or alcohol

  • Blood thinners are often a concern of patients when considering acupuncture, however, it is our experience that this is not a reason to avoid it. There is no to very little bleeding in an acupuncture treatment.

Q: Does insurance cover acupuncture?

A: Some insurance companies accept acupuncture claims. Please contact our office with your insurance information so we may verify your specific benefits. Medicare DOES NOT currently cover acupuncture, nor do many Medicare Supplement plans.

What is Myofacial / fascia Therapy and how does it help?

Myofascial therapy is a manual therapy technique that focuses on releasing tension in the layers of fascia covering muscles.
Myofascia means the fascia surrounding muscle. Fascia release and Fascia Reset™ Therapy means that release can happen anywhere in the body where there is fascia (which is almost everywere), not just the muscles. Relieving tension and pain in the fascia, the connective tissue surrounding muscles, organs, bones, vessels, our brains, etc., can help bring the body back to balance. This release technique involves applying very gentle pressure to obtain a release.

To Make The Most of Your First and Future Visits

PRIOR TO YOUR TREATMENT APPOINTMENT

It is important to eat something before your acupuncture/fascia treatment, but equally important not to overeat. A meal or snack within three hours of your treatment is best. It is recommended not to over-exercise or consume alcohol within a six hours period before or after your treatment. Some treatments may require the wearing of a gown, but most often wearing loose, comfortable clothing will be sufficient.

POST TREATMENT APPOINTMENT

After your treatment, it is best to take it easy. If you must return to work after your treatment, we recommend minimizing your level of intensity when possible. The doctor may recommend skipping a work-out or activity they feel would compromise your best treatment results.

SCHEDULING DETAILS - treatment time, changes & cancellations

Your first visit may extend to an hour and a half and possibly two hours start to finish. This time will include an intake interview, evaluation, and initial treatment. Subsequent visits will last one hour or less., and will include a brief update/evaluation and treatment.

We understand that unexpected things come up from time to time, and if that involves needing to reschedule or cancel your appointment, please provide a minimum of 24 hours’ notice for these changes when possible.

There will be a $45 charge for missed/cancelled appointments with less than 24 hours’ notice. Tardiness of 10 minutes may be accommodated, however any lost time due to such circumstances will be forfeited.
